Mega Millions

Mega Millions is a multi-state lottery game with large jackpots. Nine states participate in Big Game Mega Millions: Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Virginia. By teaming up together, the member lotteries are able to offer players jackpots that start at $10 million. The lottery jackpots grow until someone wins. Jackpots can grow as high as $500 million or more. In fact, the lottery holds the record for the largest lottery jackpot ever in the United States: $366 million.

On average, 35% of all Big Game Mega Millions ticket sales are dedicated to the beneficiary (Government programs) of each participating state. Approximately 50% of every dollar wagered goes back to the players in the form of prizes, and approximately 5% goes to retailers who sell tickets. The remainder is used for administrative costs.

Mega Millions rules for each member state may be different resulting in the exact disposition of lottery revenue. The common base for all Mega Millions variations has players picking six numbers from two separate pools of numbers: five different numbers from 1 to 52, and one additional number ("Mega Ball") from 1 to 52. The Mega Millions lottery jackpot is won by matching all six winning numbers. The first five numbers can be drawn in any order, but the Mega Ball on your ticket can only match the Mega Ball number drawn.

There are eight other lottery prizes you can win. Big Game Mega Millions jackpots are paid over 26 years or if you pick "cash option", you can receive a lump sum payment. For every million dollars won, a winner will receive approximately $38,462 per year before taxes.

The Lottery Directors of the original member states of Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan and Virginia created The Big Game (the initial name of Mega millions) in 1996. Sales for the game began in the previously mentioned states on August 31, 1996. The first drawing took place on September 6, 1996.

After successful growth of the game in 1997, a Tuesday drawing was added in February of 1998 and players were given a larger lottery numbers matrix to choose from and a lump sum or "cash option" payout in January of 1999. The latest change occurred in May of 1999, when New Jersey was added as the seventh Big Game State.

Starting the drawing of Friday, May 17, 2002, several additional changes took place: New York and Ohio joined the game to increase the number of member states to nine, the prize structure was changed, the number pools were changed (which altered the odds of winning), and the game was renamed to Big Game Mega Millions.

Today Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesday and Friday nights at 11:00 PM EST by the Georgia Lottery in Atlanta. The live drawing results can be seen each Tuesday and Friday at USA Mega.
